Washoe County School District held an official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Spanish Springs Middle School today. The site for the school is near the corner of David Allen Parkway and Windmill Farms Road. Drive North on Sparks BLVD, turn right on Kiley Ranch Parkway, turn left on David Allen Parkway then turn right on Windmill Farms Road.
The new middle school will be named Sky Ranch Middle School, after a World War II-era airfield that was located nearby. The school is scheduled to be open in August 2019 for the 2019-2020 school year.
The finished school will house about 1,400 sixths through either graders and will be modeled after Washoe County's Depoali Middle School in South Reno. It is expected to relieve overcrowding at the Spanish Springs Shaw Middle School and several other area elementary schools once the sixth graders are moved out of elementary schools and into middle school.
Thanks to the passage of WC-1 in November 2016, a sales tax increase of 0.54 cents per $100 spent that will go toward building 15 new schools over the next 15 years. This is expected to help relieve overcrowded schools, accommodate growth and provide updates for certain schools. The Washoe County School District infrastructure plan includes 3 high schools, 3 middle schools, and 9 elementary schools.
