Northern Nevada's baseball fans are counting down the days to the Reno Aces season opener. In just a few short weeks, Reno's first-ever Triple-A-Baseball team will play their first home game in their new $50 million outdoor stadium in the heart of downtown Reno!
On April 17, 2009 the Reno Aces will host the Salt Lake Bees!

~Aces Stadium in March 2009~
Construction of the new stadium that broke ground in February 2008 is on schedule to meet its opening day dead line. I took this picture this week as the workers were finishing installing the turf. The lights, seats and press boxes are near completion for game day.
The new 10,000 capacity stadium sits on the corners of 2nd Street and Evans Avenue. Prior to construction, there was a Fire Department (which was relocated to a temporary location), a couple of old motels, a parking lot and abandoned railroad tracks, all of which were demolished to make room for the new baseball stadium.
In addition to the ball park, development around the park will include retail shopping, three restaurants, three night clubs and an outdoor events plaza to help draw people to the area during the off season. Locals are already calling this new venue "The Stadium District."
A little background information
The Aces are from Tuscon, Arizona. Over the last several years they played as the Sidewinders. The Aces are part of the Pacific Coast League, a Major League Baseball-affiliated 16-team that stretches from California to Tennessee.
The Aces franchise was purchased bu SK Baseball in 2006. Stuart Katzoff will be managing the team.
Locals Vote On Team Name
The new owners held an online name-that-team contest and received more than 3000 entries in 2008. Over 50 entries were for the Reno Aces name and it stuck. The owner said it had a ring to it and the name "Ace" was connected to the gaming industry.

I love it when baseball season begins. It is a sing that Spring has finally arrived.
Terrie, OMG! Great minds think alike! I was going to do a post like this for my beloved Milwaukee Brewers next week! Thanks!
Bill ~ I agree, baseball is always a sign of Spring! And during Spring Break, we are taking the kids to see the A's play the Red Sox's in Oakland! Should be a lot of fun.
