The City of Reno approves new affordable housing project on Sage Street, near Downtown Reno.
Dorm style, affordable housing for the troubled and struggling residents who cannot currently find a place to live? Yes Please!! The Reno City Council Wednesday voted unanimously to enter into an agreement with the Community Foundation of Western Nevada to create 200 affordable "dorm style" housing units on 250 Sage Street. The proposed rent for a unit is $390 a month.
Afognak Native Corporation is providing the dorm units at a cost of $1.9 million, which the company says is significantly less than its replacement cost. The units, which were previously dorms for natural gas workers, will be transported from Big Piney, Wyoming. Plans for the campus include on-site financial counseling, shared bathrooms, a laundry room, commercial kitchen, and gym.
The property on Sage Street has previously been proposed as a potential site for tiny homes to serve as transitional housing. That plan is still in the works. Both projects are very nontraditional, new and inspiring, and I feel are steps in the right direction to address and help Reno's current housing crisis.
Below is a documentary video that was produced by local high school students at Spanish Springs High School. The video was entered into a national competition and won third place. There were 1,000's of entries from students across the country. These 4 students produced an over the top video called "Homeless Is Not Hopeless" that really stood out. It states that in Nevada, we are 4th in the nation for homeless people who are unsheltered. After you watch this video I am sure you will see why so many people think the affordable dorm style house in Reno is such a great idea.
