Adopt A Pet In Northern Nevada From The Nevada Humane Society

Are you ready to adopt a pet? If you are, I encourage you to adopt  from the Nevada Humane Society, it could be one of the best decisions you ever make!

The Nevada Humane Society (NHS) has been serving Northern Nevada since 1932 and is a "no kill" shelter. Their mission is to provide care to animals in need in our community and to bring people and animals together. The Nevada Humane Society saves thousands of animals each year and consistently strives to improve their services.

Since establishing the "no kill" goal in 2008,  they have been working diligently to develop lifesaving programs. With the assistance of the Washoe County Regional Animal Services, the NHS has been able to establish a county wide save rate of 91% for dogs, thus making Washoe County one of the safest communities in the nation for dogs.

The programs that have contributed to their success include:  The active local rescue groups that take many animals from shelters, volunteer support with over 650 people working together, evening and weekend adoption hours, reduced fees, trained adoption counselors to help match pets with people, adoption events both at the shelter and off site, and a free Animal Help Desk.

To adopt a pet  come down to the shelter at 2825 Longly Lane in Reno, Nevada. The shelter is open seven days a week and have hundreds of pets to choose from. Adoption Hours are:  11am - 6:30pm | Monday - Friday 10am - 6:30pm | Saturday 11am - 6:30pm | Sunday Office Hours 9:00am - 5:00pm Closed on some holidays Intake Hours 11:00am - 4:30pm | Monday - Saturday Closed on Sundays and Holidays Clinic Hours Low cost spay/neuter by appointment.

If you are looking for a companion for yourself or your pet, I think Blackie could be the perfect dog for you to adopt!!

Blackie is a Black Lab/Retriever Mix who has been at the Nevada Humane Society since 7/08. Blackie is ready and waiting for his new family to bring him home.

Blackie is believed to be 6 years old. He is very sweet and and the NHS volunteers say he likes to be held like a baby!

Blackie passed the "doggie test" which means he ate while other dogs were present. He is not protective and is good with other dogs. He loves to be outside, take walks and beg for treats.

If you or anyone you know is interested in adopting Blackie, please call the Nevada Humane Society at (775) 856-2000. Just mention you saw Blackie in my real estate blog! There are many, many other animals waiting for adoption. Please remember the Nevada Humane Society when are you ready to adopt a pet!

Hey Terrie, I bet you are proud of your Humane Society being the dog lover you are!! Blackie is a cutie I hope someone in your area sees his picture and desides to adopt him. He will make someone very happy. Please let us know what happens...

Susie ~ Visiting a Humane Socieaty can truly break your heart! But so many matches can made between people and pets when they adopt! Thank you.

Teresa ~ The NHS is a really great place. My daughter chose to have Blackie be our adopt-a-pet because he has been at the shelter so long. He is so sweet and cute, I do not know why he has not been adopted yet! The good news is he is not on a time frame, he will get to stay at the shelter until he gets adopted.

Hi Terrie,  That dog is a cutie and so is your sweet daughter!  I just wrote a post and gave you a quick mention.  Have fun with the pups!  It is very nice of you to help them out.

Terrie - If we lived in a more rural setting, my wife would have a pack of dogs.  Blackie is very cute and this is a great localism post reminding people that there are plenty of great dogs out there ready for adoption.  I had a stray who adopted me in college by following me home in the rain after a rugby game.  We had 5 wonderful years together - never did break him of his habit of hiding food in different parts of the house - it was a strange habit but he was a great dog.  His name was "Maxwell" and he's missed.

Marlene ~ Thank you for the mention in your post and for commenting on my blog and about my daughter. She was great with Blackie! We already have two dogs or I am sure I would have taken Blackie with us.

Ryan ~ I was wishing I had a larger yard so  could adopt a dog when I was at the shelter.  It was hard walking away from some of the dogs that we were saying hello to! Hopefully people will remember to adopt when looking for their next pet. Thank you for your comment.

Great post Terrie!  I wish I could take Blackie, what a cutie pie!

Terrie - Such a nice post. All the pets I've ever owned have come from pet shelters. I just don't see the need to get a pet anywhere else. They seem to know that they've been rescued and end up being the greatest companions.

Bill ~ Labs are hard not to love! It would be awesome to find Blackie a home.

Chris ~ He is scuh a sweet boy! He'll make someone very happy.

Craig ~ Did you notice my awesome footer???? Thank you again. And you are right, rescued pets make the greatest companions.

Terrie-Very cool post! I may have to do something along these lines for the Douglas Animal Welfare Group. We have three Airedales - two from a breeder, and we rescued one last summer courtesy of the Animal Welfare Group. Unfortunately, we are now at our County limit - not to mention the sanity limit - in our house...but if I could, I probably would take in 1-2 more...I just can't stand to see them so lonely, and I'm convinced I have enough love for all of them! I am trying to talk my 12 year old son into volunteering there over the summer as a dog-walker.

Christine ~ If I had a bigger yard, I would have more than two dogs for sure. I think you should do a post on the shelters in your area! People are always looking for shelters to adopts. And I may have to think about having my two 12 years do some volunteer work at the shelter doing some dog walking. Great idea.
